High School Honors Band Welcome Guide

General Information

The following information is being provided to assist students, parents, and teachers attending the High School Honors Band Clinic. Please read this material carefully. Because so many students are involved, any assistance you can give to assure that the event moves smoothly will be appreciated.

The personnel of the honors bands are seated via an audition process. The Honors Wind Symphony represents those auditioning at the top of their instrument group, and is a slightly smaller ensemble. The White and Maroon Bands are equally paired bands, and are filled out in alternating audition order. Each student needs to bring his/her own folding music stand. We cannot furnish stands for everyone. Thanks for your assistance in this matter.

Arrival at the University & Auditions

Participants should plan on arriving on the EKU campus as from 5:00-7:00pm Thursday evening. There is free evening parking directly across from the Foster Building on Crabbe St. When you arrive you should enter through the front entrance of the Foster Building where you will be greeted and directed to Foster 101 for registration. If you are part of a large group please send a single representative to registration. Checks should be payable to "EKU Bands," with each student’s names listed on the checks. PLEASE, DO NOT REPLACE students who cannot attend – we have a system for cancellations.

After registration, signage and EKU Honor Band Student Assistants will help guide you to warm-up areas and audition sites (all within the Foster Building). Please warm-up and audition as soon as you are ready to keep the process moving swiftly.

Audition results and ensemble placements will be posted in the evening on the EKUBands website (here), and a notification of this posting will be made on our Facebook page after the auditions are completed. We will make every effort to have this completed by 10:00pm.

Please make note of your placement band, and its rehearsal location:

  • White Band - Foster 100

  • Maroon Band - Foster 300

  • Honors Wind Symphony - EKU Center for the Arts

All of your rehearsals will take place in these locations throughout your visit. Remeber to bring a stand

Rehearsals & Schedule

Band members should be seated ten (10) minutes before ALL rehearsals. Please carefuly review the schedule, rehearsal locations, and plan your meals and travel to and from campus accordingly. The is especially important in transpoting students to and from the sectional locations on Friday, and or when students eat together but then need to return to multiple locations. Please be prompt and allow ample time for such travel.

It is advised that students label all intstruments, music stands, and accesories with their own names and their school. EKU does not assume liability for lost, misplaced, or broken instruments.

Don't forget to BRING MUSIC STANDS!

EKU Wind Ensemble Concert

On Friday evening, the EKU Wind Ensemble will present a free concert at 6:30pm at the Center for the Arts. Please Join Us!

Parking

On Friday, EKU Classes are in session and paid parking in the Crabbe St. lot across from Foster will be tight. It is advised that students be dropped off at either the Foster Bldg. and/or the Center for the Arts, and that those helping transport students then refer to the EKU Campus Map for parking options. Buses should utilize the lot on Kit Carson Drive and MAY NOT remain in front of the music buildings. There usually is street parking in Richmond within walking distance from the Foster building, and there are some metered or paid lots on campus. Please refer to all on-campus and city of Richmond sinage when parking on Friday. No EKU parking permits are required on weekends unless otherwise posted.

Don't forget to BRING MUSIC STANDS!

Meals and Housing

Eastern Kentucky University does not assume responsibility for the housing and meals of the participants. Supervision of students is the responsibility of the band director or appointed supervisor from each school. The Food Court (bottom floor) in the Powell Center will be open for the students if they wish to eat on campus between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., thus making it unnecessary to leave campus if you so choose. Overnight housing is available from our local motels. In most cases, the motels will be able to honor tax-exempt certificates from your school and avoid the state tax. Directors MUST BRING A TAX EXEMPT FORM FROM THEIR BOARD OF EDUCATION to be exempt from the state tax, but all must pay a hotel tax. When contacting, please indicate that you wish the special rate for students and teachers attending the School Honors Bands at EKU.
