General Information

The following information is being provided to assist students, parents, and teachers attending the High School Honors Band Clinic. Please read this material carefully. Because so many students are involved, any assistance you can give to assure that the event moves smoothly will be appreciated. 

The personnel of the honors bands are seated via an audition process. Each student needs to bring his/her own folding music stand

Tuition

Tuition for the 2022 EKU High School Honors Festival is $35.00. All housing and meal fees are the responisibilty of the individual attendees. Please make checks payable to "EKU BANDS" if participating in an honors band, OR "EKU SCHOOL of MUSIC" if participating in the honors string orchestra.


Arrival at the University & Auditions

Participants should plan on arriving on the EKU campus as from between 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17. The exact location of registration and auditions will be announced closer to the event date. If you are part of a large group, please send a single representative to registration. Checks should be payable "EKU BANDS" if participating in an honors band, OR "EKU SCHOOL of MUSIC" if participating in the honors string orchestra, with student's name(s) listed on the check. PLEASE DO NOT SUBSTITUTE students who cannot attend – we have a system for cancellations.

After registration, signs and EKU Honors Assistants will help guide you to warm-up areas and audition sites (to be announced). Please warm-up and audition as soon as you are ready to keep the process moving


Rehearsals & Schedule

Performing members should be seated ten (10) minutes before ALL rehearsals. Please carefuly review the schedule, rehearsal locations, and plan your meals and travel to and from campus accordingly. 

It is advised that students label all intstruments, music stands, and accesories with their own names and their school's. EKU does not assume liability for lost, misplaced, or broken instruments. 


Arrival & Parking

ARRIVAL & PARKING (click here for map):

  Thursday for auditions all are welcome to use the lot across the Crabbe St. from the Foster building. After 5:00p it is free (paid by the hour before 5:00p) as is most parking on campus. Just be sure to double check signage.

  Friday for rehearsals paid parking during the day is available inthe lot across the Crabbe St. from the Foster building. After 5:00p it is free (paid by the hour before 5:00p). Please pay attention to signage.

  Saturday parking on campus is largely free as well in most areas (EKU Center for the Arts, and the Lot across from Foster), but do mind signage. Parking for the final concert is free at the EKU Center for the Arts

  Buses/Vans: If you are bringing a bus or a large school van, day parking is available in the Alumni Coliseum lot, near the KY State Police end of the lot. See attached map.


Meals and Housing

Eastern Kentucky University does not assume responsibility for the housing and meals of the participants. Supervision of students is the responsibility of the band/orchestra director and [or] appointed supervisor(s) from each school. There are places to eat within walking distance of rehearsal spaces (details forthcoming).

Directors and or Parent/Guardians are responsibile for travel and securing lodging. Richmond has several hotels in the area. In some cases, the hotel will be able to honor a tax-exempt certificate from your school. Directors must bring their tax-exempt form from their Board of Education to be exempt from the State Tax, but will still be responsible for the Hotel Tax. We encourage you to ask if the hotel will offer a special rate for students and supervisors attending the EKU Honors Band & String event when making your reservation.

2022 Event Participant Nominations

Nominations for the 2022 EKU High School Honors Festvial can be submitted HERE by directors. The deadline for nominating students is Friday, Jan. 28, 2022.


2022 High School Honors Audition Music

All EKU High School Honors participants are required to play an audition after registration and check-in. The results of this audition will determine the ensemble and seating of each participant. 

Woodwinds and Brass Players: 

     1. Scales: Full range chromatic scale, and up to three major scales between 0 and 5 flats. Memorization is encouraged, but not required. 

     2. Prepared piece: from audition list

Percussionists: Please see music from directly linked above audition list. Also, ALL percussionists must bring their own snare sticks, keyboard mallets, and timpani mallets (instruments will be provided). 

String Players:

     2. Prepared Music: 3 minutes of music of the auditionee’s own choice
