Large Ensemble Auditions
SUNDAY, January 12, 2020
Foster Music Building, Room 100
Auditions are required for placement into the Wind Ensemble or the Symphony Orchestra. Auditions are not required for non-majors wishing to participate in Concert Band, but are used for chair placement and part assignments. Students interested in Jazz Band should contact Dr. Larry Nelson. Students interested in chamber ensembles should contact the professor coaching that ensemble.
Students taking applied private lessons are required to audition and be available to play in the major ensembles listed above. Consequently, all music majors are expected to keep their schedules conflict-free until after the audition results have been posted.
All auditions are blind and will be held during the times listed below. To preserve the anonymity of the process, it is imperative that students are present at the start of the audition time slot for their instrument.
SUNDAY, January 12, 2020 - Foster 100
9:00am Double Reeds
4:30pm Tuba | Euphonium
6:00pm Percussion (FOSTER 300)
The excerpt materials are designed to be challenging, thus reflecting the high level of excellence and preparation expected in the ensembles. Please prepare the materials in their entirety, ignoring any pre-marked cuts unless otherwise noted. Smaller excerpt segments will be determined on the audition day.
It is strongly recommended that students access recordings and/or scores to assist in preparation. As always, practice slowly and meticulously with a metronome and tuner/drone, maximizing all musical elements before increasing the tempo.
|Flute (Berlioz Picc., all others Flute)|
Clarinet (both play Mendelssohn)
Bass Clarinet (both play Mendelssohn)
Auditions occur at approximately 5 to 7-minute intervals and consist of several prepared excerpts. To be considered for the Wind Ensemble or Symphony Orchestra, all excerpts must be prepared and performed.
Auditions are ranked by the director of bands, director of orchestras, and the applied instrumental faculty member. The rankings determines ensemble placement, and ensemble rosters will be posted no later than Monday evening so that student may finalize their schedules during the first week of classes.
