Middle School Honors Band Guide
The following information is being provided to assist students and teachers attending the Middle School Honors Band Clinic. Please read this material carefully and discuss it with the students from your school who will be attending. Because so many students are involved, any assistance you can give to assure that the event moves smoothly will be appreciated.
Each selected ensemble will be of matched ability level as determined by the participating director’s recommendations. Each student needs to bring his/her own folding music stand -- PLEASE LABEL YOUR STANDS, CASES, & PROPERTY with the student & school name! We cannot furnish stands for everyone. Thanks for your assistance in this matter.
Arrival at the University
Participants should plan on arriving on the EKU campus as near 8:30 a.m. as is possible on Clinic day. Students arriving by bus will be met at the bus unloading area directly in front of the Foster Music and Jane Campbell Fine Arts Building. Directors should enter Foster first to confirm their registration and payment. Please collect the $25.00 participation fee per student prior to the event and bring the money to the officials located in the Foster Music Building Office (Room 101). Please make all checks payable to "EKU Bands," with each the student’s name(s) listed on the check. If paying in cash or with multiple checks, please file in an envelope with the school name, total amount enclosed, and include a list of your school's participants.
PLEASE, DO NOT REPLACE students who cannot attend – we have a system for cancellations.
Friendly Reminder: BRING MUSIC STANDS!!! -- PLEASE LABEL YOUR STANDS, CASES, & PROPERTY with the student and school name!
Once that is complete, directors should return to their bus(es) to bring their students in to the Foster Building where EKU Student Guides and or signage will help guide students to the appropriate rehearsal locations.
Students will be divided into groups reflecting the four bands to which they are assigned then taken directly to the rehearsal location for that group. The rehearsal locations are:
- Brock Auditorium Stage (Coates Bldg.) - GREEN BAND
- Gifford Auditorium Stage (Campbell Bldg.) - WHITE BAND
- Foster 100 (first floor) - WHITE BAND
- Foster 300 (third floor) - RED BAND
PLEASE ASK YOUR STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE EKU STUDENT GUIDES AND MOVE IMMEDIATELY TO THEIR REHEARSAL LOCATION. RESTROOM FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE IN EACH LOCATION.
Buses should park at the parking facilities on Kit Carson Drive (see this map). The buses MAY NOT remain in front of the music buildings.
General Parking is available throughout campus on the weekends, this map illuminates a number of parking options. No EKU parking permits are required on weekends unless otherwise posted on EKU signage. Students arriving by automobile or by van should park immediately across from the Foster Music Building in the city parking lot. Guides and or signage will greet students in the lobby of the Foster Music Building to escort them to the proper rehearsal location.
Meals and Housing
Eastern Kentucky University does not assume responsibility for the housing and meals of the participants. Supervision of students is the responsibility of the band director or appointed supervisor from each school. Case Dining Center (upper floor = cafeteria | lower floor = food court) will be open for the students if they wish to eat on campus between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., thus making it unnecessary to leave campus if you so choose. Overnight housing is available from our local motels at your own cost. In most cases, the motels will be able to honor tax-exempt certificates from your school and avoid the state tax. Directors MUST BRING A TAX EXEMPT FORM FROM THEIR BOARD OF EDUCATION to be exempt from the state tax but all must pay a hotel tax.
